ABOUT US

The role of Ecological Arts is to create art in order to understand and revitalize natural systems. Founder Rebecca Burgess has been a teacher and artist for many years.

"While studying with a weaving teacher from the Wintu tribe, I was taken to a former strip mine that was being restored by ecologists and native peoples. The teacher taught me to sing to the gray willow before pruning it for basket making materials. By pruning it we were revitalizing the willow, allowing it to grow stronger and more vibrant. This experience illuminated the nature of stewardship for me. We took care of the plants, and the plants in turn cleaned the water, the air, and prevented erosion on the banks. The baskets we created after collecting all this were beautiful and refined. The mine was being restored by the voices and actions of these singing basket makers. This was a revolution in my mind, and yet so simple. I laughed at myself for not knowing how gentle and loving it could be, to restore the earth."

For all those who have ever felt overwhelmed by the challenge of restoring the earth to natural balance, Ecological Arts offers a light of hope and a means to contribute personally and practically to this common goal.
